How age-related macular degeneration affects central vision and what can be done.
Essential Information on Macular Degeneration
Blurs the centre of what you see.
Peripheral vision stays intact.
Helps treatment begin quickly.
What Is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration blurs the centre of your vision while leaving your peripheral (side) vision intact. It mainly affects people as they get older, usually those over 55, which is why it is often called age-related macular degeneration, or AMD.
Symptoms
The most common symptom is blurred vision in the central part of your field of view. This blurry area can grow over time, making reading harder and affecting the ability to recognize faces.
Prevention
You can help protect your eyes by:
- Protecting them from sun exposure
- Eating a balanced diet
- Managing your blood pressure
- Limiting unhealthy fats
- Not smoking
Treatment and Early Detection
For some cases of wet AMD, photodynamic therapy may help. Early detection is important so that treatment can begin quickly and slow the progression of the disease.
